Russian Thistle Volunteer Campout: Cottonwood Creek
July 14, 2023 - July 16, 2023
Free
Russian Thistle is a highly invasive species that runs rampant in our area. One plant can produce up to 200,000 seeds! Friends of the Inyo and the BLM need your help removing thistle from the South Oasis Windmill site in the Sylvania Wilderness just north of Death Valley. Join us for a camp-out style volunteer event, and give back to the land while getting a little dirty!
When: July 14th -July 16th (before the plants go to seed)
Where: We will be primitively (no facilities or potable water) car-camping out at the terminus of Cottonwood Creek on the East side of the White Mountains and commuting to the project site ~5 miles south. High clearance vehicles are encouraged, the roads to the campsite and worksite are dirt and have experienced some erosion from winter.
What: We will be hand pulling thistle out in the sun most of the day. This activity is hard on the body, so we can take midday breaks back at camp- but beware, this event is not for the faint of heart, body, or will.
We will be meeting at the junction of 395 and 168 just north of Big Pine at 9:00am Friday morning. Please be sure to pre-register Sign Up! so we know how many folks are caravanning.
