Mammoth Area Trails Report – September 11, 2013

Mammoth Area Trails Report September 11, 2013   Labor Day Weekend is one of the busiest weekends for the Inyo National Forest and with its passing the summer season seems to be coming to an end.  Parking spaces can now be found mid-day at Lake George, the Devils Post Pile is once again allowing the entry of personal vehicles and there are vacancies in the campgrounds in the Mammoth Lakes Basin.  For many people (both locals and visitors alike), this time of year is cherished. Another indicator that summer is coming to an end is the changing leaves of our…

Mammoth Area Trails Report – September 3, 2013

Mammoth Area Trails Report September 3, 2013   Labor Day weekend has come and gone now and left a hint of fall in the air. The days are getting shorter and the air is getting colder. Smoke from the Rim Fire blew into the Mammoth area this past Friday, but that was short-lived, and the area is currently clear. With the busy holiday weekend, the Mammoth Lakes Basin was crowded, although less so than previous years due to the closure of the Tioga Pass road. Busy crowds can be difficult to avoid on holiday weekends like Labor Day weekend, when…

Mammoth Area Trails Report – August 28, 2013

Mammoth Area Trails Report August 28, 2013   With Labor Day coming this weekend, the symbolic end of summer vacation is upon us.  Get out and squeeze in an adventurous “last hoorah” if you haven’t already gotten back into the swing of a school schedule.  While talking about schedules and calendars, don’t forget the second California Free Fishing Day of the season, Sept. 7th.  For anglers over 16 a fishing license is required for the day but comes free of the typical one-day California sport fishing license charge of $14.61.  End summer on a thrilling note by reeling in a…

Mammoth Area Trail Report – August 20, 2013

Mammoth Area Trail Report August 20, 2013 Thanks to everyone who came out to the Summer of Stewardship Trail day at the Hot Creek Geologic Site this past Saturday! Special thanks to Boy Scout Troop 700 and their parents who were able to come and help out improving this place. With over 50 participants,  we were able to maintain 300’ of fence, removed an old kiosk, maintained and cleared 2,640’ of pathway, painted and fixed 3 picnic tables and one kiosk, restored 300’ of redundant trails, and removed 35 lbs of trash. This heavily visited area definitely needed the attention…

Mammoth Area Trail Report – August 13, 2013

Mammoth Lakes Area Trails Report August 13, 2013   Careful observation reveals hints of Fall all around the Mammoth Lakes area. Splotches of red and gold – often times just a few leaves on a single limb – dot quacking aspen groves and monarch butterflies can be seen heading south.   Despite these harbingers of Summer’s winding down, there’s still lots of Summer color out there. You just have to head up a little higher or look closer to find it.  As we mentioned last week, flowers are still abundant up around Emerald Lake. For a wonderfully fragrant display…

Mammoth Area Trail Report – August 6, 2013

Mammoth Lakes Area Trails Report   August 6, 2013    This past Saturday featured another successful Summer of Stewardship project hosted by Friends of the Inyo, MLTPA and the Town of Mammoth Lakes and co-sponsored by the great folks of the Southern Mono Historical Society. Huge thanks to the thirty-seven volunteers who came out to provide some TLC to the unique historic district and structures of the Mammoth Consolidated Mine. In addition to the afterglow of good work, all volunteers were rewarded with free passes to a night of tunes in the pines at Bluesapalooza courtesy of Mammoth Lakes…
