SUMMARY:Sierra Forager: A Free Guided Plant Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come join White Mountain District Trail Ambassador\, Jean\, on a hike up East Fork of Rock Creek where you’ll learn about\, and potentially find\, some medicinal-edibile flora.\nDetails\nWhat: Learn about conscious foraging of plants\, their edibile and medicinal properties\, and sustainable practices to preserve our wild kingdom.  \nMeeting Location: Park at the East Fork Trailhead Day Use loop (Rock Creek Sno-Park). 37.492762\, -118.717218. \nHike Duration: 9 AM – 12:30 PM on Saturday\, August 2nd.  \nLogistics: Our hike will begin at just over 8\,000ft above sea level. We will walk for 1.5 miles and gain 500 feet in elevation before returning to the trailhead. The hike should take about 3.5 hours and total 3 miles round-trip. Please bring snacks\, water\, layers\, and any other essentials for a hike in the mountains.  \nThe Sierra Foraging Walk brings many like-minded individuals together to discuss edible and medicinal uses of plants. We discuss sustainable harvesting\, intelligent foraging\, food/medicine preparations and cultural traditions. Wild foraging not only teaches us about the rich and diverse plant life\, but the intelligence of the earth we live on. Plants have an intuitive knowing that a cycle has ended\, a new one is germinating\, and what nutrients are needed to thrive. Plants teach us that change\, rebirth\, and evolution are all part of life. \nThere is certainly a seasonality for harvesting wild flowers\, herbs and mushrooms. Spring is the season for fresh young greens such as nettles\, dandelion\, thistle and mugwort. Early summer is a time of abundant blossoms of onion\, elderflower\, rose\, pennyroyal and fireweed. Late summer is the time for mushrooms and berries such as gooseberry\, elderberries\, rose hips and currant. Fall is when pine nuts and sunflower seeds are plentiful. Winter is a bit more sparse\, but you can look for tree bark and pine needles. \nRegistration\nEach individual participant must register to attend. Participants under 18 must have a parent/guardian register for them. Registration is\, and always will be\, completely free! Optional donations support our continued stewardship and policy programming.  \nRegister here!\nImportant considerations:\n\nAll ages welcome!\nThere is no running water at the hike location. There may be opportunities to filter water in the creek if you bring a water filter. Bring plenty of water and enough food or snacks to stay comfortable.\nWear sturdy shoes you’re comfortable walking in for several miles. \nWear sun protection – hat\, sun glasses\, sunscreen\, etc.\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Join us for a Volunteer Wilderness Week in the Golden Trout Wilderness!
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Inyo and the Forest Service for a Wilderness Week in the Golden Trout Wilderness from July 24-28\, 2025!\nWhat? Volunteers will work on dismantling obsolete fencing and other debris in Brown Meadow\, located along a tributary of the South Fork of the Kern River. Volunteers hike in 3.5 miles on 7/24 and spend 4 nights camped along Brown Meadow\, a scenic and historic area in the Golden Trout Wilderness\, home of the California state fish\, the Golden Trout. Tools and some supplies will be packed in by mules before the project. \n \nWhy? Fences were constructed to manage livestock when the area had active grazing up to 2000. The fences have been deteriorating in the wilderness and are in non-functional condition. This debris not only impairs the area’s wilderness character and impedes recreational access to the creek\, but it also presents an entrapment hazard for wildlife. \nWho? Inyo County locals or those from further afield are welcome to join this project. The project will include hiking and manual labor\, so volunteers should be have good physical fitness and be generally comfortable with high elevation and physically strenuous work. \nWhat do volunteers need to bring? FOI and USFS will provide all tools\, but volunteers need to bring their own camping equipment (tent\, sleeping bag\, sleeping pad\, etc.)\, food\, cookware\, and appropriate clothing. Clothing includes sturdy hiking boots\, long sleeves\, long pants\, and appropriate gear for potential rain. Waterproof boots are strongly recommended for working in the meadow. Bear-resistant cans for storage will be provided.  \nMore details here!\nThis project is now open to more volunteers! Sign up by emailing the address below.\nRegister by emailing Egan.Cornachione@usda.gov

SUMMARY:Reserve Your Spot for July 16th 6-8 PM: The Great Pine Nut Taste-Off
DESCRIPTION: Let your taste buds do the talking by helping RESEARCHERS identify which pine nut varieties are the most valuable at the great pine nut taste-off: \n\nREGISTRATION REQUIRED: RSVP FOR THE EVENT\nLocation: Friends of the Inyo’s main office\, 621 W Line St Ste 201\, Bishop\, CA 93514 (non-ADA accessible: two flights of stairs)\nResearchers from the Pinyon Community Climate Action (PiCCA) Network want to know how environmental factors (e.g.\, elevation\, temperature\, precipitation\, tree age) influence the flavor profiles of pine nuts and which varieties are preferred. Because we’re collecting data\, participants would need to provide consent. Everyone will first complete an individual taste evaluation\, and then we will have a group discussion about pine nuts and the broader role of foraged foods in today’s society.\n\n\nAll you need to do: Try five mysterious pine nut samples— each with their own flavor and texture! Besides the yummy pine nuts\, refreshments will be provided to thank you for your time during the dinner hour and your feedback will be gathered as part of a community research project aimed at improving the resilience of pinyon juniper woodlands. You’ll help us learn how people experience the different pine nut varieties and get some tasty treats! \nYou must be over 18 and not have a peanut allergy to participate. \nQuestions? Please reach out to allison@friendsoftheinyo.org \nRSVP FOR THE EVENT

\nHike Duration: 9 AM – 12:30 PM on Saturday\, July 12th. \n\nRegistration\nEach individual participant must register to attend.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Public Lands: Stories\, Film\, and Conversation with Josh Jackson\, Chris Kam\, and Brent Underwood
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Inyo for a FREE event at C5 Studios to celebrate and advocate for our public lands.\n\nWhile our federal government is attacking public lands from every angle\, threatening large-scale sell offs and ill conceived mining projects\, we come together to share stories about why we love these places and what we do to protect them.\n\n\n\nJosh Jackson is a writer\, photographer\, and speaker whose work champions the wild beauty and overlooked value of America’s public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). He will share the release of his new book “The Enduring Wild: A Journey Into California’s Public Lands“. Several of Josh’s prints will be shown and available through silent auction.\n\n\n\nOscar qualifying cinematographer Chris Kam came to the Eastern Sierra by way of Cerro Gordo and fell in love with the high desert landscape of the Inyo Mountains. When a mining company threatened to destroy Conglomerate Mesa in search of gold\, Chris jumped into action. He will screen his new film “Hole in the Mountain: Saving Conglomerate Mesa“.\n\nCerro Gordo owner Brent Underwood has been living in a ghost town and sharing it’s stories since 2020. He wrote a book about his experiences\, “Ghost Town Living: Mining for Purpose and Chasing Dreams at the Edge of Death Valley“. Brent will join Josh and Chris in conversation.\n\nA silent auction will be held for Josh’s photographs and items from Cerro Gordo. All proceeds from the auction and a portion of the book sales will be donated to Friends of the Inyo to support their work protecting public lands.\n\nRSVP here

DESCRIPTION:The time to make your voice heard for Conglomerate Mesa is now! \nThis wild desert refuge for Joshua trees and the Inyo rock daisy deserves to be protected and left untouched by mining companies seeking to extract its gold. \nThe BLM is hosting a meeting in Lone Pine on June 10th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Statham Town Hall to explain the proposed project to the public. Prior to the meeting we will gather at Friends of the Inyo’s Lone Pine office for a protest on Main Street from 2:30-5:00 pm. \nPlease join us for both! \nStatham Town Hall – 138 N Jackson St\, Lone Pine\, CA 93545 \nFOI LP Office – 142 E Bush St\, Lone Pine\, CA 93545
