SUMMARY:Volunteer Backcountry Work Week: Cottonwood Creek and Tres Plumas Meadow Wilderness Fence Removal
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Inyo and the Inyo National Forest for a backcountry volunteer trip in the White Mountains from June 19 – 21\, 2026\nThe mission! \nVolunteers will spend 2 nights camped along upper Cottonwood Creek in the White Mountains. Cottonwood Creek is a federally designated Wild and Scenic River\, home of a nursery population of the Paiute cutthroat trout\, a fish listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Volunteers will work for two full days on dismantling obsolete barbed wire fencing and other debris in upper Cottonwood Creek and Tres Plumas Meadow. Tasks will involve cutting and rolling up barbed wire\, pulling up t-posts\, and digging out and/or sawing wooden corner braces and hauling debris. \n \n  \n  \nWhy fence removal? \nThese fences were constructed to manage livestock when the area had active grazing and were in use until 2000\, after which livestock were removed from this area. The fences have been deteriorating in wilderness and are in non-functional condition. This fence debris not only impairs the wilderness character of the area and impedes recreational access to the creek and meadows\, it also presents an entrapment hazard for wildlife that utilize these meadows. \n  \n  \n  \nWho can join this trip? \nThis project is open to any volunteers with an interest in backcountry volunteer work and a physical ability to perform physical work in a remote setting. \nTiming  \nVolunteers will meet in Bishop\, California\, in the morning of June 19th at 8am and load into Forest Service and Friends of the Inyo vehicles. From Bishop\, there will be an approximately 2.5-hour drive to upper Cottonwood Creek\, over rough\, high clearance 4wd roads\, to a dispersed camp site that the group will utilize. Personal vehicles may be utilized for those with a high clearance\, off-road capable vehicle and experience with challenging driving conditions. We will set up camp near Cottonwood Creek. \nThe first day will involve setting up camp and removing and hauling materials near Cottonwood Creek. The second day will involve an approximately 1.5 mile hike one-way to Tres Plumas meadow\, where we will dismantle a small barbed wire exclosure fence and haul the material back to the camp site. We will complete hauling and removal of other nearby fence debris on the last day\, and return to Bishop by evening on Sunday\, June 21st. Work days will mostly be from 9:00am – 4:30pm. \n \n  \nWork Location \nThis worksite will be in upper Cottonwood Creek at the end of a road leading into the White Mountains Wilderness. The drive requires high clearance 4WD and recovery gear\, and vehicle access will be provided by USFS and Friends of the Inyo. Volunteers should bring all amenities desired for car camping\, including chairs\, tables\, cooler and other camp equipment. We will drive to the end of the road highlighted in orange in the map below and set up camp at the location shown. From there we will hike along the trails shown to the project work sites. \n \nGear \nAll tools will be provided by the Forest Service and Friends of the Inyo\, but volunteers will be expected to have sturdy hiking boots\, long sleeves and long pants\, and appropriate gear for potential rain. \nVolunteers should bring their own camping gear\, food and cookware. Bear resistant canisters will be provided. Waterproof boots are strongly recommended for working in the meadow. \n \nEmail izzy@friendsoftheinyo.org with “White Mountain fence removal” in the subject to sign up\nTo support effective project planning\, we ask that volunteers commit to a work week only if they are confident they can participate as scheduled. Last-minute changes can impact the success of the project\, and we appreciate your reliability and consideration. \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Backcountry Work Week: Little Whitney Meadow Wilderness Fence Removal
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Inyo and the Inyo National Forest for a backcountry volunteer trip in the White Mountains from July 23rd – 27th\, 2026! \nThe mission! \nThis may be the most physically challenging stewardship trip yet! Volunteers will hike 15 miles deep into the beautiful and remote Golden Trout Wilderness and spend 3 nights camped along Golden Trout Creek\, home of the California state fish: the Golden Trout. Volunteers will work for two and a half days on dismantling and removing obsolete barbed wire fencing and repairing  trail infrastructure in Little Whitney Meadow. The first day\, July 23rd\, will be for travel and hike to the camp site. Fence removal will be done over two and a half days\, followed by a half day of rest/free exploration and fishing on Golden Trout Creek\, Volcano Creek\, or other sights. All camp gear and tools will be packed in by USFS mules. \nWork will be physically demanding\, with plenty of breaks\, and time to enjoy the wilderness area as well. Work days will mostly be from 9:00am – 4:30pm.  Tasks will involve cutting and rolling up barbed wire\, pulling up t-posts\, and digging out and/or sawing wooden corner braces. The debris will be moved to a dedicated stash site to be hauled out from the wilderness at a later date by packstock. In addition to fence removal\, volunteers will also help repair trail infrastructure including stock fences and gates along the trails leading into the meadow. \nThis project is open to any volunteers with an interest in backcountry volunteer work and a physical ability to hike long distances and perform physical work in a remote setting. \n \nWhy fence removal? \nThese fences were constructed to manage livestock when the area had active grazing and were in use until 2000\, after which livestock were removed from this area. The fences have been deteriorating in wilderness and are in non-functional condition. This fence debris not only impairs the wilderness character of the area and impedes recreational access to the creek\, it also presents an entrapment hazard for wildlife that utilize these meadows. \nProject Timing \nVolunteers will meet at the Cottonwood Pass Trailhead at the end of Horseshoe Meadows Road on the morning of Thursday July 23rd.  From there\, we will hike about 15 miles into Little Whitney Meadow\, where we will set up camp and stay for 4 nights. Volunteers should expect to camp at Horseshoe Meadows the night of the 22nd. \n \nPack Support & Gear \nThis trip will be supported by US Forest Service mules! Mules will be able to pack in all tents\, camping equipment\, clothing\, boots and workwear\, as well as food. With some limited exceptions\, gear will need to be dropped off by July 22nd in order to be packed in.\nAll tools will be provided by the Forest Service and Friends of the Inyo\, but volunteers will be expected to have sturdy hiking boots\, long sleeves and long pants\, and appropriate gear for potential rain.  Volunteers should bring their own camping gear\, food and cookware. Bear resistant canisters will be provided. Waterproof boots are strongly recommended for working in the meadow. \n \nEmail izzy@friendsoftheinyo.org with “Whitney Fence Removal Project” in the subject to sign up\nTo support effective project planning\, we ask that volunteers commit to a work week only if they are confident they can participate as scheduled. Last-minute changes can impact the success of the project\, and we appreciate your reliability and consideration. \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Backcountry Work Week: Chiatovich Meadow Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Inyo and the Inyo National Forest for a backcountry volunteer trip in the White Mountains from September 4-7\, 2026! \nThe mission!  \nVolunteers will spend three days helping restore a degraded meadow by constructing low-tech restoration structures in small stream channels. This will consist of hauling rocks\, cutting and moving logs and shoveling dirt in a mountain meadow and constructing small structures such as rock dams\, beaver dam analogs\, and bank reinforcements within a stream channel. This work will help revitalize meadows in the remote White Mountains\, a key source of water and forage for deer\, antelope\, bighorn sheep and other species. \nFor an idea of what the work will look like\, watch this short video on restoration structure construction. \nThere will be plenty of opportunity for exploring during the afternoons and evenings following each work day. Attractions nearby include Fishlake Valley Hot Springs\,  Red Rock Mine\, and the Boundary Peak Trail.  This project is open to volunteers local to Inyo County and beyond. \n \nProject Timing and Travel   \nVolunteers will meet in Bishop the morning of September 4 th at approximately 8am. Gear and equipment will be loaded into multiple vehicles that will drive to the work site. Travel to the site will require a high clearance 4wd vehicle\, which will be provided by the Inyo National Forest and Friends of the Inyo staff. Volunteers with a suitable high clearance 4wd vehicle may drive themselves. The crew will drive approximately 2 hours to the camp site\, on upper Chiatovich Creek. We will set up base camp here\, and travel in vehicles to the work site. Work days will mostly be from 9:00am – 4:00pm with plenty of breaks. \nWork will be completed over the course of three days and will require daily hikes of approximately. The work site on Chiatovich Creek site requires about 3 miles of round trip hiking each day\, in addition to the physical labor each work day. \nCoordinates of Meadow: 37.80395\, -118.28776\nCoordinates of Camp: 37.80546\, -118.26842 \n \n \nGear \nVolunteers will be provided work gloves\, shovels\, wheelbarrows\, and all other equipment necessary for this work.  Volunteers should bring their own camping equipment\, food\, cooking supplies\, and appropriate work clothes and boots. Work will be done in relatively hot sun in a small stream channel with little shade. While work days will be warm\, nights will be cool given the high elevation of camp (8\,000 feet). Cell reception is available for some carriers near camp but will not be available at camp or the work site. \n \nEmail izzy@friendsoftheinyo.org with “Chiatovich Project” in the subject to get more information and sign up\nTo support effective project planning\, we ask that volunteers commit to a work week only if they are confident they can participate as scheduled. Last-minute changes can impact the success of the project\, and we appreciate your reliability and consideration. \n
